This is a cozy little page dedicated to my Shih Tzus, Meiling and Sophie. They have big “royal dog” energy in tiny fluffy bodies, and they take their daily routine very seriously. If you’re here for cute faces, peaceful vibes, and a touch of Chinese-inspired style—you're in the right place.
Hi friend—thanks for visiting our little courtyard! Meiling is the fierce, yet loyal explorer who loves to chase a ball that barely fits in her mouth, and Sophie is the unconditionally sweet and friendly fella who tags along, even when her limp tries to hold her back. Together, they run the house like it’s a palace: strict meal times (except any time is acceptable for a saltine cracker), strategic naps, and “please admire me” breaks throughout the day. Scroll down to see their course schedule, my favorite websites, and some dog-friendly videos for extra good vibes.
Shih Tzus are an ancient breed that originated in China over 1,000 years ago. They were cherished by Chinese emperors and lived inside the royal palaces during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Often called “Lion Dogs,” they were bred to resemble traditional Chinese guardian lions and were believed to bring protection and good fortune.
These tiny dogs weren’t just companions — they were palace treasures. They lived behind palace walls, were carefully groomed, and sometimes even acted as alert dogs, announcing visitors with their surprisingly bold bark. Today, while they no longer guard emperors, they still carry that same royal confidence and dignified charm, guarding the front door with pride.
Meiling’s name comes from Chinese origins and carries a beautiful meaning. The name “Mei” (美) means beautiful, and “Ling” (玲) can suggest delicate, refined, or graceful. Together, Meiling reflects elegance and softness - a perfect fit for her tiny frame and confident spirit. Though ironically, she tends to be very suspicious of new friends and often requires one to earn her trust.
Sophie’s name came with her when she joined our family. She had previously been in the care of an elderly couple who lovingly realized that raising a young puppy was more than they could manage. When she came to us, we decided to keep her name as a small way of honoring her beginnings. It suits her perfectly — gentle, timeless, and sweet.
